Lesson One: African Americans in the Civil War
Grade Level: 5th Grade
Objective: Students will analyze posters, documents, and photographs to gain an understanding of the role of African Americans in the armed forces of the United States during the Civil War. Students will also consider the attitudes of society during the period.
Lesson Two: The Pinkster Celebration
Grade Level: 5th Grade
Objective: Students will learn about the Dutch origins of the Pinkster Celebration, the activities and events that comprised it, and its eventual transformation into a significant African-American event. Students will also create their own Pinkster Celebration.
Lesson Three: Anti-Slavery Wax Museums
Grade Level: 5th Grade
Objective: Students will research and then impersonate famous American abolitionists and other members of the anti-slavery movement.
