In recognition of Women’s History Month, historian Missy Wolfe will present insights on her book Insubordinate Spirit: A True Story of Life and Loss in Earliest America on the founding of Greenwich and important related dramas. Her talk will transport us back into these turbulent and troubled times to look at Greenwich in a way that’s entirely unfamiliar and utterly fascinating.
Often referred to as “the non-fiction Winthrop Woman”, the book won the Washington Irving Medal for Literary Excellence. Insubordinate Spirit is a unique exploration into the life of Elizabeth Winthrop and other seventeenth-century English Puritans who emigrated to the rough, virtually untouched wilderness of present-day New England. Caught between the unendurable expectations of her Puritan relatives and land disputes with the neighboring Dutch, Elizabeth Winthrop demonstrated a tremendous strength of resolve to protect her own family and remain true to her heart.
Books may be purchased at the Museum Store in advance or on the day of the program for signing by the author. Admission to the talk is FREE, but space is limited and registration is recommended.
