Join us in welcoming springtime with a talk and demonstration by Alan Gorkin, Estate Manager and Head Gardener of Sleepy Cat Farm. Gorkin will demonstrate a simple trellis with lashings accompanied by diagram handouts, sharing tips and tricks with participants as they learn to create a trellis of their own at home.

The talk and demonstration will be followed by a discussion of best growing practices for several plants, trellis benefits, ideal combinations and growing hints. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from a collection of heirloom seeds and/or plants (vegetables and flowers) to use at home to create their own design.

Speaker Biography

Alan Gorkin

Estate Manager and Head Gardener, Sleepy Cat Farm

Alan studied ornamental Horticulture at Michigan State University and began his career working for Cornell University training Master Gardeners and assisting in the  Plant Diagnostic laboratory at Cooperative Extension of Nassau County,  Long Island.  Following this he became an instructor in the  Children’s Garden at Brooklyn Botanic Garden teaching  Botany and Vegetable Gardening to inner city youths. After a  move to the Horticulture Department, he managed the Cranford Rose Garden and later became Plant Propagator for the Garden collections.

Eventually Alan moved back to Long Island and managed the greenhouse and cutting gardens at Historic Old Westbury Gardens before  he and his wife purchased Earth Garden Florist,  Nursery and Greenhouses in New Canaan, Ct which is still operating as a florist.

For the past 15 years, Alan has been Property manager and Horticulturist at Sleepy cat farm in Greenwich, Ct.
