Job Title: Facilities Technician

Position Summary

Greenwich Historical Society is seeking a dependable, motivated Facilities Technician to support the daily care and operation of its historic campus. This full-time position combines custodial responsibilities with general building maintenance, event support, grounds care, and facility operations, including participation in a rotating weekend schedule to support campus operations and events. Working under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Technician helps ensure the Society’s historic buildings, grounds, and public spaces remain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming.

Custodial Services

  • Clean museum galleries, offices, classrooms, meeting spaces, kitchens, restrooms, and public areas.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, and sanitize interior spaces.
  • Restock restroom and kitchen supplies.
  • Empty trash and recycling throughout campus.
  • Assist with periodic deep-cleaning projects.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional appearance throughout the campus.

Building Maintenance

  • Perform routine inspections of buildings and grounds and report maintenance concerns.
  • Assist with painting, carpentry, drywall repair, hardware replacement, and general building maintenance.
  • Replace light bulbs and worn building hardware.
  • Perform minor repairs to doors, windows, shelving, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and preservation-sensitive repairs to historic buildings.
  • Help identify and report signs of water intrusion, deterioration, or pest activity.
  • Maintain maintenance records, inventories, and digital work logs.
  • Assist with vendor access, deliveries, contractor coordination, and routine inspections.

Event Support

  • Assist with general event setup and breakdown.
  • Help prepare buildings and outdoor spaces for programs, meetings, and special events.
  • Return event spaces to their normal configuration following use.
  • Work occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and assigned rotating weekends in support of campus operations and events.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Maintain walkways, entrances, courtyards, and outdoor public spaces.
  • Assist with seasonal landscaping, leaf cleanup, pruning, and campus appearance.
  • Perform snow removal and apply salt or ice melt to sidewalks and pedestrian walkways.
  • Support the care and maintenance of gardens and landscaped areas.

Safety & Operations

  • Operate maintenance equipment and tools safely.
  • Report building deficiencies and safety concerns promptly.
  • Assist with emergency response and severe weather preparation.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours emergency facility issues.
  • Follow all organizational safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Comfortable using ladders and basic maintenance equipment.
  • Basic computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, smartphones, tablets, and the ability to learn facility management software.
  • Ability to maintain digital work logs and communicate effectively by email.
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in custodial services or commercial cleaning.
  • General building maintenance or handyman experience.
  • Basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical skills.
  • Landscaping or grounds maintenance experience.
  • Experience in museums, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, hospitality venues, or historic properties is a plus.

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week with participation in a rotating weekend schedule.
  • Typical weekday schedule with participation in a rotating weekend schedule, based on operational needs.
  • Occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays for campus operations and event support.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation for emergency facility response.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Work safely from ladders and step stools.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely operate maintenance equipment, power tools, and snow removal equipment.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $40-45,000 per year, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills.
