Reports To: Executive Director & CEO

Greenwich Historical Society is seeking a dynamic, highly organized, and collaborative Chief of Staff (COS) to join our senior management team. Operating as a nationally accredited museum, historic campus, library, and archives, our mission is to preserve, celebrate, and share Greenwich history.


The COS reports directly to the Executive Director and CEO. They act as a trusted advisor, a liaison to the Board of Trustees, and a strategic catalyst across all departments. This individual will manage executive office operations, keep leadership aligned on high-impact projects, and help coordinate institutional strategy, Board initiatives and meetings, and annual work plans tied to the Centennial Strategic Plan (2026-2031).


Founded in 1931 as an organization devoted to collecting and sharing the Town’s history,
Greenwich Historical Society has grown into a nearly 3-acre campus with nationally significant historic buildings, a new 10,000 sq. ft. facility with museum, library, and visitor center, and a multi-faceted range of programs and activities. Located on the historic Cos Cob Harbor, home of Connecticut’s first art colony, the Historical Society has two main areas of focus: as a museum (galleries, Bush-Holley House, education center) with related exhibitions and education programs for children and adults, and as a center for Greenwich history (library and archives, preservation and publication programs).

Key Responsibilities


Institutional Strategy & Fundraising Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Board of Trustees and committee chairs.
  • Draft Board agendas, assemble meeting materials, track follow-ups, and take notes.
  • Bridge communication gaps across departmental teams working on shared strategic
    initiatives.
  • Partner with the Chief Development Office to synchronize the CEO’s donor stewardship
    and cultivation schedules.
  • Act as a trusted sounding board and advisor to the CEO to support effective executive
    decision-making.

Communications & Daily Operations Management

  • Evaluate inbound executive inquiries, route them appropriately, and delegate tasks to staff.
  • Draft critical executive correspondence, speeches, reports, and presentations for the CEO.
  • Serve as an official proxy for the CEO in key operational, community, and internal meetings.
  • Supervise administrative and project-based personnel within the Executive Director’s
    office.
  • Maintain the CEO’s calendar, professional travel logistics, and high-priority appointments.

Financial & Work Management

  • Partner with the Director of Finance & Operations to navigate the annual budget planning
  • cycle.
  • Gather work plans and numbers from department leaders to ensure budgets align with
    institutional strategies.
  • Compile and finish the final annual work plan for distribution to the Executive Committee.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: B.A. or B.S. degree required; advanced studies preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years in organizational administration, ideally within a non-
    profit environment.
  • Technical Skills: Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite and Zoom; database or CRM proficiency
    is preferred.
  • Interpersonal Strengths: Exceptional communication, customer service, and
    collaborative management skills.
  • Discretion: Proven history of handling highly sensitive and confidential organization data
    with strict integrity.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $65-75,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
